AC & S Invests in New Facilities
AC
&S is continuing to invest in new facilities in spite of the current economic
downturn. The photo shows the third building now nearing completion on the site.
The company purchased an approximately 11 acre site from the Putnam County
Development Authority last year and proposed construction of a new building on
the site.
In spite of the economy, AC & S President Robert Cantrell has moved ahead with
plans. The expansion has already resulted in the hiring of four temporary
(contract construction) employees and one new full-time employee in the office.
Instead, the company now has three (3) buildings now complete with plans to
begin construction of a fourth within a matter of weeks. In this photo to the
right, the small building on the left is the mechanical building supporting the
growth on the property. The approximately 11 acre site was sold to AC & S in
2008 and was formerly owned by the county. The property is now on the tax rolls,
for the first time since 1973, and is beginning a new life in a productive
facility for the company.
The new construction includes: a 10 X 20’ building includes an indoor break
area, a 20’ X 40’ production building and a third building that will be 40’ X
80’ and includes warehouse space.
The company’s plans include more future expansions, particularly in the
biodiesel area. AC & S produces biodiesel from vegetable oils or animal fat; the
biodiesel has the potential to reduce dependence on oil from international
sources and its potential to reduce global pollution.

AC & S is also working with the City of Nitro and Kemron Environmental Services
(http://www.kemron.com) on a major Brownfields redevelopment project. According
to Christopher J. Amick, Regional Manager, Kemron, the project includes the
joint administration of two separate Federal Brownfields Assessment grants
awarded to the City of Nitro by EPA Region III, including the following:
- A $200,000 Hazardous Brownfields Assessment Grant for inventory,
prioritization and assessment of hazardous sites in and around the City of
Nitro; and
- A $200,000 Petroleum Brownfields Assessment Grant for inventory,
prioritization and assessment of petroleum sites in and around the City of
Nitro.
AC & S is cooperating with the City of Nitro and Kemron in the completion of a
Phase I ESA for their property (the former Avtex Fibers/FMC wastewater treatment
plant currently owned by AC & S). Additional information is available from
Kemron.
